Colonel John Fenzel Endorses Doug Gansler for Governor

ROCKVILLE, Md. — Former Attorney General Doug Gansler, a Democrat running for governor on his proven record of taking bold action to deliver real results for the people of Maryland, today welcomed the endorsement of retired Colonel John Fenzel of Annapolis.

“Doug Gansler will be a leader all Marylanders will be proud to have as their Governor,” said Colonel Fenzel. “With Doug’s exceptional vision and leadership, Maryland will be the most veteran-friendly State in our Union.  His values of integrity and service are beyond reproach. I support Doug’s demonstrated commitment to our nation’s service members, veterans and their families — because he understands more than most ever could, not only the contributions, but also the sacrifices our veteran community routinely makes on our behalf. Under Doug Gansler’s leadership, Maryland will be a place all veterans will be proud to call their home.”

“I am honored and humbled to have earned the endorsement of Colonel Fenzel, who was instrumental in helping build our plan to make Maryland the number one state in the country for veterans,” said Gansler. “For three decades, John dedicated his distinguished career to keeping our country safe, and he has continued to be a voice for veterans and military families in his retirement. I welcome him to Team Gansler and will undoubtedly continue to seek his counsel.”

Fenzel is a retired senior Army Special Forces officer (Green Beret) who has served on our nation’s battlefields around the world. He has served as a military assistant on the personal staff of the Secretary of Defense, as a Special Assistant to the Vice President and as a White House Fellow during the Clinton and Bush administrations.

Fenzel commanded the Special Forces Training Battalion at Fort Bragg, North Carolina and an Army brigade at Fort Knox, Kentucky. In the wake of the September 11th attacks, he served as Staff Director for Tom Ridge in the Homeland Security Council. He was the principal architect of The Homeland Advisory System, our nation’s color-coded alert system.

In his 30 years of military service, Fenzel has served in numerous command and staff positions around the world. During Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, he commanded a Special Forces “A-Team,” training, equipping and advising a Kuwaiti Battalion and accompanying them during the liberation of Kuwait. He has commanded three Special Forces companies, leading the first Army deployments to Pakistan and the Baltic States. In Bosnia he commanded the special operations teams in the U.S. and British sectors, working closely with the United Nations to secure the indictments and convictions of those responsible for war crimes in Srebrenica. He is the only active duty American military officer to testify at The Hague in support of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY).

Fenzel is a graduate of the Naval War College and the National War College. He lives with his wife and three children in Annapolis and is the author of three acclaimed novels, The Lazarus Covenant (2009), The Sterling Forest (2016) and The Fifth Column (2018).
