“Gansler-mentum”: Gansler Rockets Up Four Places in The Duckpin Rankings After Strong Showing in Western Maryland Straw Poll

Reporters, I wanted to be sure you saw the following coverage of the Western Maryland Democratic Summit’s Straw Poll, which was held this weekend at Rocky Gap Casino and Resort. With crime as the number one issue that voters care about this year, former Attorney General Doug Gansler and former Hyattsville Mayor Candace Hollingsworth are the best-suited ticket to make Maryland safe. Would love to chat with you about the state of the race. -Katie

After beating Peter Franchot by seven-fold in the Western Maryland Democratic Summit Straw Poll this weekend, former Attorney General Doug Gansler “rocketed up” four places in The Duckpin’s Gubernatorial Power Rankings. Commentator Brian Griffiths noted “Gansler seems like he is on the way up.”

The Washington Post reported on the event, writing, “In the governor matchup, former attorney general Douglas Gansler finished second in the field with 71 votes; former U.S. labor secretary Tom Perez took third with 48 votes; and former U.S. education secretary John B. King Jr. placed fourth with 45.”

Maryland Matters also took note of Gansler’s strong finish and observed, “The result had to be particularly disappointing for Franchot, who has topped all public polls in the primary so far and who has wooed Western Maryland political and community leaders for years. […] But Franchot also went over his allotted 10 minutes of speaking time Saturday and several members of the audience shouted and applauded to try to get him to stop.”

The publication also reported that the event’s winner Wes Moore “bused several supporters to Rocky Gap.”

Rockville Nights wrote an extensive piece on the event, observing that “the real surprise was the second-place finish by former Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler, who beat once-assumed-to-be-frontrunner Peter Franchot 7 to 1 in the poll with 71 votes.”

The post continued, “The Gansler campaign was thrilled with the result, which it did not find as surprising, because their candidate has been gaining notice locally for having a presence west of Hagerstown in this campaign.”
