Gansler Statement on Deadly Shooting of Wicomico Deputy

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. – Former Attorney General Doug Gansler today issued the following statement on the death of Wicomico County Deputy Glenn Hilliard:

“We as a state should not accept the devastating news of Deputy Hilliard’s senseless death as an acceptable cost of law enforcement. Although the details of this incident are still emerging, one thing is clear: we must get guns out of the hands of violent offenders. That means referring those cases to federal court where there are stricter sentences. Gun violence threatens civilians and law enforcement officers alike, in every city and county in Maryland, from Baltimore to Smithsburg to Pittsville. Law enforcement is a dangerous job and it is no wonder we are facing a police shortage across the state. Tackling gun violence head-on will make policing safer. I send my sympathy and support to Deputy Hilliard’s friends and family. May his memory be a blessing.”
