Gansler Statement on SCOTUS Decision to Strike Down New York Gun Law

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. – Former Attorney General Doug Gansler, who is a Moms Demand Action Gun Sense candidate, and former Hyattsville Mayor and Lt. Governor candidate Candace Hollingsworth today issued the following statements on the decision of the United States Supreme Court to strike down a New York law requiring applicants to show a demonstrated need to carry a concealed weapon in public:

“The Supreme Court’s decision to strike down this New York law will likely have devastating implications for Maryland, which has a similar ‘proper cause’ requirement,”  said Gansler. “We cannot hand out conceal-carry permits like candy. If and when Maryland’s law is struck down, every Tom, Dick or Harry who feels like toting a gun in public will be empowered to do so. Make no mistake: that means there will be more guns on our streets, and more guns in the hands of people who shouldn’t have them. There are nearly 400 homicides a year in Baltimore alone, and the majority of those murders go unsolved. That number will undoubtedly rise if and when the good reason requirement is removed.”

“Black communities are disproportionately impacted by gun violence, and this decision will further jeopardize the safety of our children and families,” said Hollingsworth. “The court’s decision demonstrates their complete disregard for human life. Furthermore, Justice Alito’s rationalization that the law did not prevent the Buffalo shooting is both harmful and hurtful. More guns will undoubtedly result in more deaths.”
