Gansler Statement on Texas School Shooting

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. — Former Attorney General Doug Gansler today issued the following statement in response to the shooting at an elementary school in Texas that has left at least 14 children and one teacher dead:

“Fourteen elementary students. One teacher. All murdered. School shootings, no matter how frequent, never become less devastating.

“All parents know what it feels like to drop our children off at school while trying to suppress that fear in the back of our minds that they might not come home. Whether a random school shooting or targeted gang violence, that fear should never become a reality for any family no matter where they live.

“While we learn more about what happened in Texas, this much is clear: we must end this nation’s scourge of gun violence. That means taking guns out of the hands of violent offenders, ensuring every school has at least one mental health professional for every 250 students, and placing armed and well-trained School Resource Officers in our schools to be the first line of defense in the event of a school shooting.”
